Horror experience at the bargain corner

While browsing through some children shoes at one of the stall in Ben Thant Market, a pair of shoes caught my attention. I picked up that pair to have a closer looked and a FAT AUNTY came forward and pointed at YX saying he may fits into the shoes (in broken English).

Automatically, I asked "How much ?" and she replied " 500,00 dong " = RM80. Upon hearing the price, I put down the shoes and said "It's ok, Thank you" and walked away. This FAT AUNTY was unhappy and grabbed my hand while demanding me to name a price for the shoes. She kept on saying "How much you want, How much you want?".

Dad who was standing a few steps away saw and walked towards us. Dad spoke to me in Hokkien and asked me what's wrong. I was surprised that the FAT AUNTY understand Hokkien and can even speak in Hokkien. She told dad that I should give her a price for the shoes and not asked for the price and just walk away.

To my horror, this FAT AUNTY pinched my arm and mumbling in Hokkien "Don't buy, then don't ask".

In my defensed or rather natural reflexed , I pinched her back and told her off. How could she be so RUDE to a customer and simply pinched people.

We walked off.

To think back, lucky that FAT AUNTY did not bring her group of 'ji mui' (sisters) to chase after us since we were at her territory. What a horror experience !

  1. wow, that's very rude and very bad.. my worst experience was only the owner mumbling unhappily, never to the extent that they will grab us and scold..

  2. Huh? PINCHED you?? Thats very bad!! I know usually they'd just show their unhappy face or mumbling to themselves, but I never came accross seller who is so rude!

  3. RM80 is over-priced and I never encountered such rude person before!! Moreover, she's in "sales" line, shouldn't have act this way. But glad you and your dad managed to walk out safely. Better go to the FIXED prices area.

  7. sorry, i can't help laughing at the pinching part..hahahahha. it's too funny :) i have heard of people showing a black face when you don't buy but definitely not pinching :) really have to be very careful with these sellers.

  8. That's why I do not like going to this kind of countries, the same everywhere... That is something VERY common. They expect you to bargain...starting from maybe 10% of the stated price. No, thank you...I'm not accustomed to such hassles. Just state a fair price and if I think it's reasonable, I would buy - give me a discount if it please you...no need for all that haggling over the price. So irritating!

  9. all i experienced was that they held my hands and not let me go.. kept pulling me back.. very sien one.. sometimes i dare not give a low price also..scared they scold.. that is why i ended up buying not much things when i went overseas esp to china too! :)

  15. Scary lo! Like that also can, first time I heard. When I went to Chu Hai, China, I asked the price and didn't buy, they just mumbled and showed dark face.

  16. Wah, this FAT AUNTY is really bold to go and pinch customer and give that kind of remark! If the seller can say until 'if don't buy, don't ask' , then I can safely assume she is an unethical trader. Btw, RM80 equivalent for the children shoes is really cut throat!

  17. Hi...what a 'scary' encounter... it will be remembered as those 'traders from hell' stories!!!

Kudos to u for ur bravery. Did she shout at u as u walked away???

Thanks for my visiting ur blog...interesting read on ur vietnam trip.
