Dilemma of where to service the car

When the car was still under warranty, we sent to the original workshop for servicing. When the warranty period was over, FIL advised to bring the car to those private workshop for servicing as it will be cheaper. I did what was told and had blog about it over here. (By the way, the below servicing center I'm going to talk about is not at Perodua).

After sending our cars to the private workshop for some time, we had noticed some flaws. When we told them about our car problems, they just said no worries. They did not detect any defects at all ! Hubby was worried and asked me to bring the car back to the original workshop recently.

Few days back, I went and was told that the mileage of my car at that moment required Major Servicing which cost an estimated of RM800 ++. I was shocked because all these while, I've never paid so much to service a car. But I've no idea what does a major service inclusive of.

In the private workshop, the most I paid was only about RM140 per service. All they do was changing black oil and oil filter.

Since I was already at the original workshop, I agreed with the normal servicing (change black oil, oil filter and xxx oil - can't remember the name) which cost me about RM200 including labor charge and 6% govt tax. And the technician did some other inspections as well. That was being shown in the jobsheet that the customer service lady showed me before I agreed with the servicing.

The technician then found that the front brake pad are getting thinner and suggested to have that changed during the NEXT service (in another 3 months time). Then I requested for the lady to give me a quotation on that item and it cost RM 474.80 excluding 6% govt tax (the rear brake pad are still usable)
Hubby and I was thinking if we should seek a 2nd opinion from those private workshop or not. By the way, this car of ours just turned 5 this year.
Dilemma dilemma.........car maintenance aren't cheap !  Where do you usually sent your car for servicing and How much do you pay for your car servicing ?

  2. Buy the brake pad from outside and ask the mechanic to fix, which is cheaper compares to what the original workshop charged. They only charge labour & tax.... You can save a few hundreds.

I'd done that before but not sure your workshop there allows such.

  7. Ya it's so expensive to maintain and service a car. For hb new car we use to go original workshop. For my 2nd hand car I went to normal workshop. It also depend wat type of service, eg. my car air-cond spoil and I went to those workshop which specialize in servicing air-cond.

  8. actually i m blessed that my hubby did our cars maintenance by himself such as changing black oil, filter and etc. For major problem, he will seek from a lot of workshops before putting the car to them cos he is afraid he the car may end up with lot of troubles..

  15. If it is a major service then the amount would be hefty depending what parts needs to be change and etc. If biasa service it's between rm100-rm200

  20. My cars all serviced under the manufacturer till warranty period ends... after which I will send the car to my friend's workshop, costing around RM100 - RM120. I will normally ask to check the whole car again if I think I have clock more than 20K - 30K KM after each service. So, it will be like every half year, send for major check...

  21. I dont know for me servicing the car, first thing it is the normal 500kilo meters and then i will always tell my mechanic to change whatever he deems right, i forewarn him not to fool me, cos sometimes i will randomly send my car for other to check if my mechanic tellling me certain parts have to be changed,,

thank god my current mechanic is trust worthy,,,,

  22. Price of servicing it has been regulated by the gomen. All workshops must have the rates up on the walls to inform car owners. Your RM140 per service is quite reasonable for engine oil, oil filter and spark plugs etc and that's what I normally pay not more than RM200 for a normal service. For me the service center would be slightly more expensive as they are specialized but then must get a good and reliable private mechanic if you opt for the latter. All you need is to apply a 'trial & error' thingy in choosing a private mechanic and easiest way is via friends recommendation. Good luck.

  23. Yalor, the other we sent our new car for service at the Proton original workshop. Don't know true or not(U Diok Boh), once we got back from Yamcha(morning tea), instantaneously the staff informed us our car was done liao! Huh?! It was less thn 20 mins wor(and the car still parked at the outside parking lot where we parked early on)?!!!

  24. For both our cars, we send to the original workshop cos my hub doesn't know any good mechanics to send to. When you have reached a major service, this can't be avoided no matter where you service your car. As the car ages, there are bound to be more problems coming in. You have to be prepared to spend more money on the maintenance or change to a new car ;)

  25. The private workshop was actually introduced by FIL but we noticed he is not a good mechanics!

  28. But hubby and I don't know much about car. Don't know when we should change those parts.

  29. Oh yes...the original workshop did inform me that every 20K should do a major service.

  30. I have quite a good mechanic in Dsara Utama. If you want, I can tell you exactly where that is. He's quite good and we have stuck to him for a few years now. He will not simply change and will show you the part that needs replacing. If can use, he will let you use for a few more months. Price wise...so far no complaints.

And better still he has come to rescue me few times when I was stranded before.
