Colouring

On every Tuesday, there is a drawing class in YX's school. No matter how much he loves to draw, he NEVER likes to colour his pictures. I'd told him many times that his drawings won't look nice if he did not apply colour into his drawings, but he was just too lazy to do it.

However, he was forced to colour his drawing for his school homework. He complained of tiredness and sometimes, he just coloured the picture and left the background empty. After some nagging, he would reluctantly finished up the background but in a MESS !

Anyway, his teacher still appreciated his works and pinned up his drawings on the board behind his classroom.

Then, I found out some of his classmates used water colours and crayons to colour their drawings. I did not know they are allowed to use those materials as all the while, I thought primary one students are only allowed to use colour pencils !

I then gave him a box of crayons (oil pastels) and was glad that it really helps to beautify the background. They looked neater than colour pencils many times and also he would coloured faster. Yet, he still complained of hand ache and tiredness.

Last Tuesday, his art teacher gave each students a piece of A4 paper and they can choose to draw just anything. YX drew a Robot Dog, as what he described. Click here to see his drawing. He used a few minutes to draw, but took him forever to colour ! From dinner time till over his usual bedtime, he was still struggling to finished up his colouring.

  2. My boy too, dislikes colouring. He likes to draw and sometimes draws comic strips with storyline but never likes to colour them. He only colours drawings that needs to be passed up to his teacher in school and that too, takes forever to complete. I read somewhere that this type of children are probably future cartoonists.

  15. Some people are not artistically-inclined. Can't be forced. For instance, you see parents forcing their children to go for piano lessons and they hate it - so miserable. Most of them never go very far - no interest, no passion...a sheer waste of time.

    1. tq for the advise. I never force my kids. I let them choose what they want. They will be happier to learn this way :)
